Common Myths About Microcement, Busted

As the popularity of microcement increases, so do the questions. More people are learning about this versatile surface material and wondering if it’s too good to be true. At Alternative Surfaces, we’ve been Melbourne’s go-to X-Bond Microcement installers for 25 years. In this article, our resident experts have debunked some of the most common misconceptions and hesitations about microcement.

Whether you’re considering microcement for your next renovation project or simply curious about this modern material, this will give you a clear understanding of its true benefits — proving that it’s a versatile, practical, and easy choice.

“Is microcement is hard to clean? I’ve heard it’s susceptible to stains and mould.”

Part of microcement’s appeal is that it’s low maintenance and extremely durable.

A good quality sealer is the best defence against for stains or mould. We use high-grade sealers developed by the engineers who invented X-Bond, switching between formulas depending on the area of application. Residential kitchens, industrial flooring, external surfaces… Wherever it’s being installed, this will ensure lasting protection. It’s important to engage a trained applicator, as improper sealing can lead to problems.

When it comes to regular upkeep, microcement is very low maintenance. Floors just need to be swept or mopped, and all you need for countertops or shower walls is a cloth and some water. The only considerations are wiping surfaces down regularly and clearing any spills or abrasive residues promptly (i.e. dirt and sand). You can also use a mild detergent or the specially-formulated Stone Soap.

Products like purple shampoo, fake tan, vinegar, oils shouldn’t be left to linger on the surface. Clean them up sooner rather than later.

“Microcement is not as strong as other surfaces.”

Wrong! Microcement is incredibly durable.

Microcement flooring in particular will withstand heavy foot traffic and is used often in commercial, retail, and other public spaces. Our past projects include floor plans both both big and small; shopping centre fit-outs, offices, restaurants — everything from multi-level buildings to boutiques. Overseas, X-Bond Microcement has been installed in high-end hotels, high schools, casinos, and government buildings (including a fire station).

Residentially, it’s also a common specification across the entire home. From the living area to bedrooms, upstairs and downstairs, inside and out… Microcement flooring will stand the test of time regardless of what you throw at it.

“Can microcement get wet? My designer told me that microcement is not waterproof.”

It’s correct that microcement isn’t waterproof — but it can easily be waterproofed with the help of a waterproofing membrane.

The SEMCO Works Liquid Membrane is an advanced waterproofing and anti-fracture membrane used with all of our X-Bond installations in wet areas. With this crucial step of preparation, you can have microcement in your shower, sink basin, pool, sauna, steam room and more with absolutely no problems.

As mentioned, we also finish our X-Bond Microcement with high-quality sealers as extra protection.

“Does microcement crack easily? What happens as the substrate underneath moves?”

Compared to other microcement products on the market, X-Bond is one of the most flexible. This means that it won’t crack with natural settlement and building movement. Cracking would only occur if a very damaged substrate isn’t properly stabilised before application.

This balance of flexibility and strength is particularly important if you’re renovating and resurfacing an old substrate. You want your new surface be long-lasting, but also withstand the rigours of natural movement underneath.

The best thing about X-Bond is the resistance to de-lamination. In over 25 years as microcement installers,

“Microcement is just a fad.”

Would you say the same thing about concrete? Concrete has been a design “trend” since the end of the 19th century, so it’s safe to say the concrete look is an enduring movement in contemporary design. Microcement was created as an alternative to concrete flooring, walls, and joinery — similar in appearance but with greater possibilities. Safe to say microcement is just as timeless as concrete.

Ultimately, microcement isn’t just used for feature walls. Because it’s able to be customised in different colours and texture finishes, you can make anything happen with X-Bond; ensuring a result you’ll love forever while still bringing a unique, stand-out element to your project. Hand-trowelled, no two microcement surfaces are the same.
