In Focus: The Davis Residence by Blur

Blur Architecture’s Davis residence is a project driven by materiality, from colour to texture. We asked Ahmed Osman, Director at Blur, to give us an insight into the thought process behind the materials selection, particularly the choice to engage our team to install X-Bond Microcement to the bedroom walls. Keep reading to find out why X-Bond was specified.

Could you please share an insight into the project brief for Davis Ave?

Our architectural brief was to provide an extension to the existing property which included a lap pool, gym, master bedroom and ensuite, above a basement garage. It was to appear as a stand alone building as it occupies the neighbouring property, while being physically linked to the rear living of the existing house.

Why did you decide to specify X-Bond for the walls in the bedroom?

Materiality and texture were driving forces in the project. The exterior cladding of the new building is a vibrant green copper colour and we knew we wanted to contrast this with a soft and calming interior palette inspired by contemporary Mediterranean architecture. In the end it was an easy decision to go with X-Bond.

Were you considering other materials for this area?

Since the very beginning we knew we wanted more than just plain plasterboard walls and bright white was out of the question! The textural qualities of the hand trowelled microcement perfectly suited the curvature of the walls and we love the visual interest of the changing light throughout the day on the dappled surface.

Is the end result what you were hoping for?

Most definitely, and the client is a big fan of it too.
