Project Highlight: Microcement Flooring at a Port Melbourne Town House

From Pitch Architecture + Design, this project comprised six 3-bedroom townhouses. One of them contains its own bespoke interiors, featuring X-Bond flooring. Read on to find out more about why microcement flooring was specified within this multi-residential development.

For the Port Melbourne Townhouses, Pitch Architecture + Design’s goal was to create something of a landmark; choosing to work in contrast with the surroundings. The clients didn’t want a watered-down imitation of the suburb’s heritage, but something that felt more unique and novel — both inside and out. The challenge here is designing something that stands out for all the right reasons.

Organised across 3 storeys, the townhouses are shrouded with a facade of vertical timber battens and a matching metal screen, cohesive geometry that ties all three levels together. With the third level set back from the boundary and terraces concealed on the roof, the result is an eye-catching structure that doesn’t feel overly confronting.

The interiors for one of the homes, named The Lounge Retreat, was created to be a sanctuary for a small family. The focus was functional living and entertaining with references to contemporary European design. X-Bond Microcement flooring was specified not only for its practicality but also its aesthetic in relation to the brief requirements: sophisticated, modern, and fresh. It also has the added bonus of being suitable for in-slab heating.

The material selection showcases industrial touches — including exposed concrete, track lights and folded steel. Of course, this is tempered by warm timber joinery and luxurious gold trimmings. To continue the veil effect created by the exterior cladding, reeded glass screens cover specific interior details.

For seamless living, all appliances are integrated and concealed behind smart joinery. This seamless presentation is also reflected once again in the microcement flooring, which is installed as a continuous slab with no joints or grout lines. A seamless overlay for streamlined living, working, and entertaining.
