A Mediterranean Dream Featuring X-Bond Microcement
When home feels like an exotic villa, why would you ever want to leave?
A history beginning in 1877 with one of Sorrento’s original limestone cottages; located across the road from the foreshore, a coveted location on the Mornington Peninsula, the heritage-listed beachfront facade remains largely in tact. Inside, however, a total transformation has taken place — featuring X-Bond Microcement almost everywhere. The full renovation of this residence is being completed across multiple stages, but Stages 1 and 2 of construction are ready for unveiling. Discover a 19th century home in a totally new light.
Construction included a total backyard renovation with a pool, outdoor kitchen and entertaining area. A brand new two-storey extension was also added to the rear, featuring a guest wing, laundry, and gym. In renovations to the main dwelling, the updated living, kitchen, and dining area enjoys unbeaten views of the bay. Stage 3 is currently underway.
In this house, old meets new and the building’s existing character is honoured while making space for 21st century living and entertaining. When it comes to finishes and materials, it’s the perfect balance of classic and contemporary. It was important to the client to maintain the integrity of the original limestone walls from 1877. Almost every other surface is finished in X-Bond. In fact, creating seamless continuity from inside to out, X-Bond is on display everywhere you turn. From floor to ceiling, walls to joinery, inside the showers and submerged in the pool.
The intention was to bring Mediterranean vibes to the Mornington Peninsula — think exotic hotel villas in the Greek islands and Italian countryside. If you’re inspired by the Santorini look, and wondering what material is used in those modern cliffside mansions, microcement is the answer. It’s your best chance at replicating the architecture of luxurious Greek villas in your own home.
Surrounded by arches and decked with hanging planters, the outdoor space is inspired by Italian courtyards. It’s set up for entertaining, with a BBQ and bar plus a dining setting that seats the owner’s extended family, who congregate under the arches regularly for special occasions.
